Teaching? Make it fun.
I found a piece of scrap paper at home and was about to recycle it until I spotted this cute little picture of a baby on it.
My daughter told me that it was something she picked up from her teacher in school. The drawing actually teaches her numbers and additions.
The face and eyes are zeros
The bang is made up of the number 1 from one end to the other.
The ears are made up of a pair of 3s and when you add 3 and 3,
you get a 6 for the nose.
The tick for the correct addition forms the lip.
The hands and the legs are made up of a pair of 6s each and add 6 and 6
you get 12 for the upper body and 12 for the lower body.
You get a tick for the right answer to form the crotch.
Way to go, teacher!

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
This cute T-shirt design reminds me of a song, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother". It was recorded by the Hollies in 1969.
I can't find a better way to teach you about sibling love. Let's karaoke this song with the Hollies.

Self Reliance. What you need to know.
The earthquake in Sichuan should make us ponder on this question.
If a disaster occurs and our children are separated from us in the confusion, will they be able to stand on their own? I discovered Survival & Self Reliance Studies Institute provides many useful guides for:
Natural disasters
Terrorism
Emergency Situations
Camping
Outdoor Survival Basics
At their link to Self-Reliance there are many do-it-yourself instructions for producing food or creating things that may no longer be available during a disaster.
Now that is what I call being totally self-reliance to be self-sufficient.

My children of the Z Generation
Kids, Sacha Chua got her job with IBM because she blogs. And if you are impressed by how she managed to sketch her tips with Nintendo DS to create her slides, here is her how-tos.

What do you do at home, Mom?
How sweet! My children want to know what I do at home when they are not around. This is what I do, kids.
I try to be a maid-less-ly happy mother. Being maid-less in a double storey house and a madness for neatness, I try to find short cuts to household chores so that I have time to do the things I love to do.
Things I love to do can be anything from watching my favourite TV programmes while I clean or cook during commercials breaks to listening to the radio while I iron. I like to write on my blogs while I think about up-keeping the wellbeing of the family.
I keep myself busy learning new things and working on my hobbies so that when your father comes home, I will not be asking him to take me out because I am bored, cooped up all day at home. I like the idea that when you are back from school, I am naturally cheerful.
So, what I actually do at home is being happy within and without.
Be good, children. Help me stay this way.

Give me a word, Mummy
Callie enjoys making sentences. I like it that she is able to pass her time this way while waiting for someone. I have encouraged her to listen to the songs she has heard to see if she can create sentences that can be made into lyrics.
I also highlighted to her that if her sentences are interesting enough, she can make some money from companies running contests or who need slogans for printing on their T-Shirts.
Sometimes this habit of hers can be irritating especially when you are trying to read the Sunday newspaper and you have her breathing down your neck asking for the next word. So, when we are out next Sunday, I am going to bring along a piece of paper and those cuttings from the junk mail I have been keeping to label my vegetables.
I will put all the pictures into a bag and have Callie pull one out so that she can work on making sentences with it based on how she feels about eating the ingredient. Better yet, I will also bring along a pair of scissors and some junk mails so that she can cut out pictures of words she would like to make sentences with. That should keep her busy enough for me to finish reading my Sunday news.

Cooking inspirations
I discovered Michael Chu today. He is an Engineer who cooks and he stores all his recipes with pictorial instruction on Cooking For Engineers.
I like it that he conducts "Cooking Test" to discover the best equipment and method to cook an ingredient. Check out the test he did on frying and microwaving Bacon and the utensils he has tried.
My children will find this article "Kitchen Knives - what to buy?" that he wrote for Hub UK and his link to Ingredients Dictionary useful.
While I am at it, I might as well add links to recipes from programmes that we watched on TV. Callie did ask for them.
Asian Food Channel
Take Home Chef, Curtis Stone's recipes
Jamie at Home, Jamie Oliver recipes
Recipes from Restaurant Makeover
Chef Michael Smith's recipes from Chef at Home and Chef at Large.
Recipes from Food TV
and food glossary and tools

Callie's into desinging
Bright and early Sunday morning, both my children gave me a warm "Mother Day's" greeting. Callie has more to offer me though.
Here is a card she created for me at her Sunday Dhamma School at the Sungai Long Buddhist Society.
A card she created in school.
Her designs of things she would like me to have.
Her version of "Beauty and the Beast" that she rewrote for me.
More declaration of her love for me. The window on the card opens up to a drawn picture of me with Callie.
I am amazed by her creativity.
I asked her when she did all these as I have not seen her working on them. She said she locked herself in her room and created them secretly.
With this picture she showed me, she told me that she would like to be an Interior Designer. It is actually made up of 4 pieces of drawing blocks pasted together with drawings of the kind of rooms she would like to have in her future home.
Just look at the details she put into her creation. I am so proud of her.
It is no wonder that she enjoys watching these programmes on TV

Getting Callie to eat
Callie is a small eater. I used to tell my friends that if they have lost their appetite, watch Calvin eat. He eats with such gusto that you would think everything he eats must be delicious. On a diet? Watch Callie eat. Lunch at 1.00pm can dragged till 4.00pm with her!
She loves eating sweets, tidbits and anything crispy, which can be too "heaty" for her. When she was younger, to encourage her to eat I used to name dishes after her and pretend that she has created it.
Here is one she "created" with corn flakes, cheese and bread which I have helped her record on a piece of paper.
She loves eating corn flakes. So, I suggested that she eats it with bread and cheese. That way, she can cut down on corn flakes. She calls this "Crispy bun with cheese".
